Why vitality and well-being matter for workforces

When we look at health outcomes, our research shows that high vitality respondents report better health, lower prevalence of chronic conditions, less stress, and a lower sense of loneliness. Among the working population, high vitality and well-being is linked to higher job satisfaction and to better job performance.

High vitality individuals are more optimistic about managing their health

Those with high vitality are more optimistic about managing their health conditions. High vitality individuals report better overall health, and are less likely to defer receiving care.

    High vitality individuals demonstrate resiliency

Individuals with high vitality feel more capable of bouncing back from illness or injury than those with low vitality.

Vitality and stress go hand in hand

Our research shows that stress impacts quality of sleep, contributing to lower well-being. Additionally, lower vitality is associated with higher levels of stress.

    Social well-being impacts vitality

The majority of high vitality respondents say they can successfully build connections with others.

    How do we measure Vitality?

The Evernorth Vitality Index© (EVI) establishes a subjective scale which ascribes motivational and psychological needs that contribute to vitality – autonomy, competence and relatedness. When these needs are met, vitality is generated. Using our proprietary question set, we’re able to evaluate whole person health by generating a ‘vitality score’.

Vitality drivers include: intellectual, environmental, social, physical, mental, spiritual and financial well-being. When these are rated high, an individual’s vitality score can be influenced. Employers can therefore play a role in ensuring that their employees feel supported in these categories, making for a better workplace environment and helping individuals feel resilient inside and out of the workplace.

Every year, Cigna Healthcare International Health commissions the vitality and well-being study to get a pulse check on well-being across the globe, gathering workforce trends and providing insights as to how employers can support well-being. Only by addressing the multiple determinants of health – such as social, financial, and intellectual well-being – can organizations effect real change in people’s lives.
